Unlike Steroid injections, Hyaluronic acid injections have a cumulative effect of lubricating the joint, in a way that steroid injections don’t. In contrast, repeated steroid injections harm cartilage.
The main risks/ disadvantages of hyaluronic acid injections are temporary or no effect of the injection, especially in patients with more severe arthritis, risks of bleeding and infection, previous allergies to hyaluronic acid injections. It may take more than 1 injection for pain relief. If necessary, you will require 1 injection at least 1-2 weeks apart for 2 months, needing possibly 3 to 4 injections in total. It often takes 6 to 8 weeks for hyaluronic acid injections to work.
